What Is a Tooth Extraction?
A tooth extraction refers to fully removing one of your natural teeth from your mouth. Extractions are always done to improve the health of your teeth, gums and mouth when no other treatment is possible or needed. Extractions can be done to both prevent problems from happening (wisdom teeth) or when a tooth is experiencing problems (severe decay). We will perform an exam prior to any extraction being done and will offer other treatment options as needed.
Why Is a Tooth Extraction Needed?
Tooth extractions are simple surgical procedures done in our office. They can be beneficial to patients of all ages and are often detrimental to the health of your mouth. Some reasons you’ll need an extraction include:
- Impacted wisdom teeth
- Severely decayed teeth
- Loose teeth
- Stubborn baby teeth
- Severe overcrowding
- You want to avoid more complicated procedures to save the tooth
Who’s a Good Candidate for a Tooth Extraction?
We perform a comprehensive examination and take x-rays before we perform any type of extraction. This gives us an idea of what problems the tooth is experiencing and the best way to go about removing the dentition. Our goal is to offer you extractions that are comfortable and easy. We offer sedation and local anesthetic as per your request when having an extraction done.
What Happens During a Tooth Extraction?
We first administer a local anesthetic or general sedation as needed. We start by removing the tooth using specialized tools and instruments. If a tooth is impacted underneath the gums, a small incision is made to remove the tooth. Sutures may or may not be needed depending on the location of the tooth and what steps we took to remove it. You’ll go home biting down on a clean, dry piece of gauze and will be instructed on when to remove it. Aftercare instructions help to ensure that the surgical site heals quickly and properly.
