What Are Inlays and Onlays?

An inlay and onlay is a restoration that you may benefit from if you need more than a filling but less than a full crown. These restorations are made using high-quality and realistic materials that mimic the look of your natural teeth. They can last for decades with proper care and are designed to protect your teeth while helping with overall functionality. They’re the perfect medium between a filling and a crown.

Why Are Inlays and Onlays Needed?

You may need an inlay or onlay if you have a large filling that needs to be replaced or if you have an area of severe decay. Likewise, an inlay and onlay is ideal for patients who’ve broken or cracked their tooth just enough to warrant a smaller restoration. Inlays sit on the inside of the cusps of a tooth while the onlay sits on the very top of the tooth’s crown. They’re smaller in size when compared to a full dental crown.

Who’s a Good Candidate for Inlays and Onlays?

You’re a good candidate for inlays and onlays if you need a restoration that offers stability, security, and durability. Some patients prefer inlays and onlays to fillings because they are long-lasting when placed over the tooth. Placing inlays and onlays allows you to retain the entire tooth’s structure without compromising it during the dental crown procedure.

What Happens During the Procedure for Inlays and Onlays?

We work to first administer a local anesthetic to the area being treated. We remove all decay and old filling from the tooth and then take impressions. The impressions will be used to create the brand new inlay or onlay for you. You’ll then come back in for a second appointment to have the new restoration placed. We’ll adjust the fit and bite and you’ll be ready to leave the office loving the way that your smile looks.
