What Are Dental Fillings?
A dental filling is a restoration that replaces areas of decay in one or more teeth. When tooth decay begins to develop, it can infiltrate the tooth and cause issues with sensitivity and pain. We can remove this decay, preventing it from getting worse, and then place a tooth-colored filling in the area it was removed. Filling are durable and long-lasting, so you can enjoy a restoration that lasts for many years.
Why Are Dental Fillings Needed?
The most common reason for needing a dental filling is because you have a tooth that has a cavity in it. If the cavity is ignored and left untreated, it will eventually get worse to the point of the tooth needing either a root canal or complete extraction. Before it’s able to get to this point, we can remove the decay and place a filling. Fillings are ideal for pediatric as well as adult patients.
Who’s a Good Candidate for Dental Fillings?
We will perform an exam to determine if you may have a cavity and need a filling. We use your dental x-rays to check for areas of decay that may go unnoticed with a typical exam. Our goal is to spot any decay in the mouth and provide treatment as early on as possible. Most patients who need a filling can safely have the procedure done and benefit from removing the cavity.
What Happens During the Procedure for Dental Fillings?
We administer a local anesthetic to the area and then begin by removing the decay. The small hole is then prepared to receive the filling by using a bonding agent. The composite filling is placed into the hole and we’ll smooth it carefully into place. It’s then cured and hardened with a brilliant light. The bite may be adjusted as needed and you’ll be ready to go home and enjoy your new filling. Multiple fillings can be placed at the same appointment as needed if they’re on the same side of the mouth.
