What Are Dental Bridges?

A dental bridge is a type of restoration that can replace one or more missing teeth. The bridge is similar to a dental crown, but there are more teeth involved and the goal for using a bridge is to fill in areas where dentition is missing. It’s not uncommon for bridge work to last for decades without needing repair or replacement. Dental bridges are easy to place and are made to mimic the look of your natural smile.

Why Are Dental Bridges Needed?

The most common reason for needing a dental bridge is because you have a tooth that’s missing. The most common type of bridge includes two outermost teeth that sit on top of your natural dentition. The middle tooth then sits on top of the gum line to replace what’s missing. Bridges can be made to replace more than one tooth as needed.

Who’s a Good Candidate for Dental Bridges?

To determine if you may need a bridge, you’ll come in for an exam. Patients who aren’t good candidates for dental implants will find bridge work to be easier and less invasive. Because bridges can last for many years, they’re an ideal option for individuals wanting a restoration that they won’t need to fuss with or worry about in a few years to come. The bridge is solid and not removable, so you won’t have to worry about it falling out or needing to be specially cleaned.

What Happens During the Dental Bridge Procedure?

We first administer a local anesthetic to the area of the mouth receiving the bridge. The surrounding teeth will be filed down to a smooth foundation for the bridge itself. Impressions are taken and sent off for a new bridge to be made just for you. We then schedule a second appointment for you to come in and have the permanent bridge placed. You’ll go home from your first appointment with a temporary bridge in place. The permanent one is then adjusted and you’ll be ready to enjoy your brand new restoration.

If you think you may need a dental bridge, be sure to call us today so that we can get you in for a consultation appointment.
